The Director of Fine Arts and Cultural Heritage, Enrique Ujaldón, along with the First Deputy Mayor of Cartagena, José Vicente Albaladejo, director of the Department of Prehistory, Archaeology and Ancient History at the University of Murcia, Francisco Reyes Marsilla, with a group of archaeologists from the University of Murcia, and the directors of the excavation, this morning visited the archaeological site of Roman Amphitheatre Cartagena.
Ujaldón explained that the recent findings of the excavations have shown that the amphitheater is full, with all the sand and step around four meters.
This has forced replated the initial project and launch a commission of experts, as was done at the Teatro Romano, to take decisions archaeological recovery and create more suitable building.
The UMU archaeologists have visited the site so they can gain a clear picture of what was found, before they start to protect against rain.
Where work has been done since December in the old bullring have discovered new rooms and monumental structures: a first step, divided into five and separated by a hallway and a stairwell who agreed to the corridor.
Currently have discovered 17 amphitheaters in the Iberian Peninsula (Spain and Portugal), including six of monumental structures, and the five most important are Segóbriga, Mérida, Italic and Tarraco, which now joins the Cartagena .
As for the materials used, the stands are made of Roman mortar, volcanic rock and sandstone.
