The region has recorded a total of 284 transplants in 2009 thanks to donations from 51 people
University Hospital Santa María del Rosell de Cartagena has been a new multiple organ donation has benefited seven patients.
The organs were donated and transplanted kidneys, liver, heart, pancreas and corneas.
It is also the first donation of the pancreas performed at the University Hospital Santa María del Rosell and third of heart since I started this type of action in the Hospital.
The deputy medical intensive care department and the transplant coordinator at University Hospital Santa María del Rosell, Javier Gil, said it is "the best Christmas present you can have a person waiting for an organ whose life depends precisely on a transplant. "
Gil wanted to express his "heartfelt thanks" to the families of donors "for the great act of generosity as they do in a very difficult time."
Also added that "thanks to them, and increasing public awareness, many people can save or improve their quality of life."
At surgery, surgeons have been involved from other Spanish hospitals for heart extraction, liver and pancreas, and urologists and ophthalmologists at the University Hospital Santa María del Rosell, for the kidneys and corneas.
The surgical team has enjoyed the support of intensivists, anesthesiologists, neurologists, nurses and attendants of the hospital in Cartagena.
During 2009 the Region of Murcia has recorded a total of 284 transplants, with donations of 51 people.
Thus, medical services in the region have done 92 corneal transplants, 88 bone marrow, 53 liver, 46 kidney, four of one heart and pancreas.
Interventions have been conducted at the Hospital Universitario Virgen de la Arrixaca (42), Hospital Santa María del Rosell (6), the Hospital Rafael Mendez (1), Hospital Reina Sofía (1) and the Hospital Morales Meseguer (1).
