The Minister of Agriculture and Water, Antonio Cerdá, today inaugurated the new premises of the Agricultural Cooperative Southeast, SureScan, located in Pozo Estrecho Cartagena council.
The owner of Agriculture and Water said the "motivation and tenacity" of the cooperative members to transform their business towards horticultural production to the disappearance of cotton.
SureScan, founded in 1962 in Santomera, started ginning cotton growing, but the entry into force of the reform of cotton with the single payment scheme derived its activity toward the manipulation of citrus, mainly.
This cooperative generates 60 jobs and has an output of 20 million kilos a year of lemon, orange, mandarin, grapefruit, cauliflower, zucchini, cantaloupe and watermelon, among other products.
Today, SureScan has an area of more than 165,600 meters square, divided between the towns of Santomera, Pozo Estrecho, Lobosillo, and Las Palas-Fuente Alamo.
Cerda said the globalization of markets and increased competition "is forcing the cooperatives to meet new challenges" and said that under a market "increasingly open and focused," the need for greater organization of agricultural cooperatives for " to control the largest possible volume of production. "
Agriculture responsible for regional government noted that the agricultural cooperatives in the Region of Murcia billed about 900 million euros per year, representing 47 percent of the production of the agricultural industry.
