The Community, the City of Cartagena, and Narrow Gauge Railway (Feve) have now advanced to promote a project to implement a tram to the port city and municipality in the Mar Menor, which offers a flexible transportation system and ecological citizens.
The president of the Community, Ramón Luis Valcárcel, the Mayor of Cartagena, Pilar Barreiro, and the president of Feve, Angel Villalba, today signed the Feasibility Study and the Mobility Plan for the construction of a tramway for the city skirt the Mar Menor.
With the signing of the agreement, which took place in the Consistory of Cartagena, the regional government through the Ministry of Public Works and Planning, and Feve agree to jointly fund the development costs of the Plan and Feasibility Study .
The report includes technical guidelines, economic and management to be followed in this process, and who, according to President Valcárcel "is the first step to launch and promote a sustainable and environmentally friendly transport in this stretch of coast of Murcia."
This is a tram system that would function as a suburban train in the metropolitan area as a tram in urban areas, and includes three phases of intervention (Cartagena-Los Nietos, Cartagena City and Los Urrutias-San Pedro del Pinatar) that permit to operate a tramway line over 55 miles long.
This system consists of a mixed transport unit electric train for two-way travel without having to change and thus achieve very competitive travel times compared to other modes of transport.
First Phase: The Union-Cartagena
The first phase would transform the current line of Feve, Cartagena-Los Nietos, in a system adapted to track electrified railway-tran, so you can move both types of trains interchangeably.
This section would allow intermodality with other public transportation, like bus, since this system allows you to make stops every 400 meters.
All this would result in the redevelopment and improvement of vehicular traffic throughout the route between La Union and Cartagena, improving urban mobility in both municipalities.
Second phase: Cartagena city
The second phase of the study include the construction of a tram line that would surround the city of Cartagena and would be integrated with the previous installment.
This road, 11 kilometers, more than 20 between Cartagena and grandchildren, will provide access to university faculties, the bus station and railway station, shopping centers, the Hospital Rosell, San Javier airport, military installations and sporting and tourist areas, such as the Port or the historical.
Phase Three: The Urrutias, Los Alcazares, San Javier, Santiago de la Ribera and San Pedro del Pinatar
The last phase of the study would include extending the train line-tran to Los Urrutias, Los Alcazares, San Javier, Santiago de la Ribera and San Pedro del Pinatar.
It would be an extension of the tram from La Union, along the entire shore of the Mar Menor, with a total length of 25 kilometers.
In addition, this phase of the Feasibility Study will also include the possibility of a second branch extending from La Union to Cape Palos and Los Belones.
