Pilar Barreiro Mayor along with the Minister for Social Policy, Women and Migration, Joaquín Bascuñana, the Senior General Manager, Paloma Recio, and the councilman of Social Care, Antonio Calderon, visited the Day Care Centre for people over the Algar, which has found a plaque with the name of Alfonso Escámez Liarte, in remembrance and honor of the former president of the pensioner's home in the town and whose determination and commitment was to a large extent the construction of this facility.

The center currently has authorized Alfonso Escámez attention to 20 people (15 for seniors with limited mobility and five with Alzheimer's) but its capacity can reach up to 34 seats.

Was first constructed in the municipality of Cartagena with an investment of 710,629 euros, and came into operation last February.

After touring the premises, the Mayor and the Minister have signed an agreement for basic services, home help service and support program for social inclusion, for a total of 2,469,384 euros, of which 1,852,038 are produced by the region and 617,345 by the city of Cartagena.

Through this agreement is funded home support services, maintenance of schools and social services including programs that develop during this year in the municipality of Cartagena and employing 76 technicians.

Pilar Barreiro The mayor has criticized the national budget cuts in social benefits, a reduction that had to make up the autonomous regions and municipalities.

Of the 10 million we have in this City Council for Social Services in 2009, more than five municipal resources come from three of the autonomous region, and only one from the Ministry, said the mayor.

Barreiro pointed out that while national budgets decline, the needs of the population rise.

Of the 24,000 euros a day spent by the council of Social Care in basic benefits, we have passed the 43,000 euros, said the mayor, and are the municipalities which have to take care of these investments on social benefits.
