The Department of Health launched this past April for three months, the campaign to control the seagull population in different areas of the city, especially those in previous years has documented the existence of nests and eggs of these birds.
Note that in this third year of the campaign high citizen participation and collaboration with municipal services has been essential, given the dissemination and publicity given to it by the areas most affected by this problem.
In these three months - April to June - 65 parts have been attended incident from neighbors.
In addition, we have reviewed 98 points of which 58 were found to have nests.
In all cases, we proceeded to punch in 63 eggs and 29 animals removed.
The downtown area of the city - Old Town, Sea Wall, Park Towers, University Plaza of Spain, Carlos III street to Paseo Alfonso - accounted for 90% of the total nests found.
The remaining 10% is in the Eixample area.
Last year, in 2008, the campaign began in May, after nesting had begun.
We found 28 locations and 26 nests, proceeding to punch in 14 eggs and the withdrawal of 26 birds.
This means in the current campaign - with the punch of 63 eggs - has succeeded in eliminating the problem before the chick had left.
The draft seagull population control began in 2006, together with the population study of pigeons.
In this first year, no punch took any action or removal of nests or chicks, although it is located 13 locations in the town and there were 17 nests and 18 chicks.
