The Department of Social Affairs of the City of Cartagena and Polytechnic University of Cartagena offers a year Shared Housing program.
Through this program students of the University may share a flat with older people, staying the course in the homes of elderly people living alone without any cost, in exchange for support.
An estimated total of 6,000 people over fifty who live alone in Cartagena.
The Shared Housing Program is an initiative based on mutual aid and intergenerational solidarity that seeks to respond to both the company and support needs of older people as to the accommodation needs of university students during the academic year.
Older people provide students with free accommodation at home and in return it will receive support in working on different tasks, procedures and guidance in general.
To join this program, seniors must exceed 50 years, have appropriate housing and finding sufficient levels of personal autonomy.
Shall provide at home a room suitable for the study and use of common household services.
Respect the time of study and classes.
Young, meanwhile, must be enrolled at the Polytechnic University of Cartagena and have no mental disorders that may affect the normal coexistence.
Properly used and household units of housing and meet the performance requirements specified in the agreement regulating mutual.
Older people, Municipal Institute of Social Services would pay them a small monthly stipend with which to cover the increased water and light for a person living at home.
The student, working on tasks to accompany the elderly, can get free credits that come with the UPCT.
This program will be implemented primarily at the beginning of each academic year, however, may be used throughout the course and made many additions are necessary.
