Deputy Mayor Agustin Guillen has gone this morning at the opening of the research station that the company Nunhems Spain SA in La Palma.
In these facilities, using advanced techniques in biotechnology and traditional plant breeding, develop new crop varieties with novel characteristics that meet market needs.
Among the activities carried out include the selection of parental lines, the program crosses to obtain hybrids and subsequent analysis and measurement of agronomic value and competitive advantages they bring.
The research station was begun in 2006 with the development of a breeding program for the Piel de Sapo melon.
The total area of the station is 16 hectares.
Mainly improvement programs being carried out are of pepper, artichoke, melon, lettuce and watermelon, aimed at Murcia and the Mediterranean basin.
