The curbside recycling in Cartagena (26/05/2009)

José Vicente Albaladejo, Councillor for Infrastructure, Transport, Works and Projects of the City of Cartagena, and Juan Alonso de Velasco, deputy director of Marketing and Communication Ecoembes, non-profit society that manages the recycling of lightweight containers (plastic , cans and cartons) and cardboard and paper packaging, today unveiled Telerecicla campaign, which aims to sensitize the citizens on how to properly separate waste containers.

Under the concept of 'Recycling at home', this national campaign is developed, for the second consecutive year, with the aim of encouraging awareness of the city, getting more knowledge on how to properly separate different types of containers without mixing with other waste and, thus, contribute to an increasing number of containers can be recycled.

From City Hall we are making real efforts in recent years in this area, to convey to the public that such actions not only affects the care of the environment, but also in the pockets of citizens, as it reduces costs City Council, said Albanese.

From today until next Friday 29, a team of 8 riders through the streets of Cartagena to meet the concerns of citizens about recycling and will visit households that request to pick up your bag of lightweight containers (plastic, cans and cartons).

Remember that Cartagena is one of six cities chosen by Ecoembes - near Gijón, Palencia, Salamanca, Guadalajara and Cadiz - to carry out home visits.

To announce the arrival of motorists have been distributed throughout the municipality leaflets explaining what the campaign, the dates of visits and educational information on the separation and recycling of packaging waste.

Also, a team of hostesses, accompanied by a yellow inflatable container, has distributed promotional materials in different places of the city's busiest while resolved questions about the separation of packaging from the neighbors.

To reward the interest and involvement of citizens, all participants entered to win a daily video game console and a car at the end of the campaign.

To further promote participation in Telerecicla, Ecoembes new this year has focused on social networks Facebook creating a character - Anthony Reciclón - in addition to an application - Spain's Yellow Tint -.

THE COLLECTION IN CARTAGENA

Councilman Infrastructure has given details on the important progress that has been occurring in Cartagena as treatment and waste collection is concerned.

Currently have 1,232 yellow bins located in all municipalities and in 2008 we collected approximately 2,200 tons of such waste, representing an increase of 11 percent over the previous year.

Plastic containers, cans and cartons from the yellow container are transported to the plant in Murcia, where materials are sorted by then be delivered to recyclers who turn into new raw material to manufacture different products such as textiles (fleece), construction materials (pipes and carpets), furniture (benches and bollards), new metal packaging, among others.

ON ECOEMBES

Ecoembes ( www.ecoembes.com ) is a public company non-profit organization whose purpose is to manage a system to separate collection, recovery and recycling of lightweight containers (plastic, cans and cartons) and packaging cardboard and paper.

This is the Integrated Management System (GIS), identified by the Green Dot.

In 2007, thanks to the collaboration of citizens, businesses and local authorities could be recycled 1.25 million tons of lightweight containers and paper cartons.

Since the implementation of Integrated Management System (GIS) Ecoembes in May 1998, has prevented more than 10 million tonnes of packaging needlessly ended up in landfills, which is equivalent to fill more than 720 football stadiums.
