The Ministry of Agriculture and Water, in collaboration with the City of Cartagena and the guilds, has launched a campaign of collection of batteries used in Cartagena on the occasion of Easter.
This campaign, which began yesterday, Good Friday and runs for 40 days, involves the installation of containers in the warehouses of the brotherhoods and the door of the Church of Santa Maria, to enable citizens to deposit their cells and used batteries, preventing many of these highly polluting waste harm the environment when thrown in the trash.
Last year we conducted a pilot collection of these materials with great success.
In total, we collected over 500 kilos of batteries used in processions, which were subsequently transferred to Ecopark Cartagena.
The aim of this campaign is to raise awareness of the environmental benefits of recycling and the need to avoid contamination by leaching.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Water this week also authorized the creation of two new integrated management systems for batteries, that the operators responsible for the process of collecting this waste and its transfer to the municipal parks, where they are sorted and sent to the treatment and recycling plants to obtain new raw materials like silver and mercury for industrial use.
