The Institute of Cartagena Bernabeu achieved the first birth of a free man with surrogate retinoschisis (26/03/2009)

This is the second case in Spain.

The first was also achieved in the IB, at the headquarters of Alicante, and was the first case in the world.

Bernabeu Institute of Cartagena has achieved the first birth of a male Murcia retinoschisis free family.

The baby was completely healthy in January.

This has been assured this morning the center's medical director, Dr. Fernando Araico.

"First we did an in vitro fertilization and then analyzed the embryos by Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD)" and saw what was altered. "

The couple "will be able to transfer a single embryo transfer but usually two, but had only a healthy one," said this morning the expert in the course of the IB II Reporting Breakfasts Cartagena.

The treatment was performed in August 2008.

The embryo came forward "and the woman, who was a carrier of retinoschisis, was carrying a healthy baby."

The baby was born in January, "a little early, but perfectly," he assured Dr. Araico.

Bernabeu Institute diagnosed more than 20 diseases with Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD).

Of these, three have joined the list in recent months.

This is the Charcot Marie Tooth syndrome, spinal muscular atrophy and polycystic kidney disease.

The group has been a pioneer in Marfan's disease and retinoschisis, becoming the first worldwide to achieve the birth of a baby free of such ailments that they bore their parents.

In the case of Ataxia Espinocerebrosa, IB also was the first in Spain to get it.

The diseases for which PGD is most demand are Marfan result of previous achievement, and Huntington's chorea.

Thus, diseases that are diagnosed in the IB are Huntington's chorea, fragile X syndrome, myotonic dystrophy, Marfan syndrome, retinoschisis, Hemophilia-A, cystic fibrosis, thalassemia, Hydrocephalus, emerin-Dreiffus, pigment incontinence, acute intermittent porphyria, Adrenoleukodystrophy, spinocerebellar ataxia 3, Duchenne muscular dystrophy, paralysis hypocalcemic Angioedema Familiar, Carney Syndrome, Charcot Marie Tooth syndrome, spinal muscular atrophy and polycystic kidney disease.

If a patient is interested in any disease that does not appear on this list, the team would be put to work in this unique case, as it constantly DGP protocols are designed for other diseases.

Thus, this list is constantly growing.

Treatments in 2008

Dr. Fernando Araico, during the meeting with the media, highlighted "the significant increase of cycles performed, as they have carried out 398 cycles, compared to the 266 that were made in 2007."

Of these, 311 were for IVF / ICSI, 56 to Oocyte Donation, 8 and 23 to cryotransfer DGP.

In 2007 the results were 209 IVF / ICSI, 48 of Oocyte Donation, 3 and 6 cryotransfer DGP.

The medical director also referred to semen quality, and explained that "there are various environmental toxins" that affect the sperm.

Araico stressed that "in more rural areas, without much pollution, the percentage of men with poor quality is 5%, compared with 25% affected in areas with more pollution."
