Marín Escombreras highlights the Valley as an engine of regional industry and generator of business opportunity for SMEs (16/03/2009)

The Minister of Universities and Research Company, Salvador Marín, highlighted the role Escombreras Valley and established companies in this area of Cartagena as a driver of regional industry, and as major generators of employment and business opportunities for quality SMEs in the region.

The Minister made these statements after his meeting, along with the mayor of Cartagena, Pilar Barreiro, with Repsol responsible for the complex in the Valley of tailings.

Also, the director and the mayor visited and checked at first hand the works to expand the facilities of the multinational, which have an investment of 3,200 million euros, the largest industrial investment ever made in Spain.

Repsol makers and Barreiro told Marin that have been awarded to date more than 200 contracts to outside companies, of which half are local and regional, to which both leaders discussed the need to increase this percentage.

Another docking

Marin and Barreiro also visited the second front Repsol docking in the harbor of tailings, which is already underway and will respond to increased production brought about the expansion of the refinery.

This new front, which has received an investment of 24 million euros, is equipped with the most advanced systems for loading and unloading of the market and improve safety conditions by reducing waiting times for ships.

Repsol's investment to expand its refinery complex Escombreras Valley will allow the multinational to double its production capacity to 220,000 barrels of oil per day.

This industrial project, with completion and commissioning is scheduled for 2011, will employ over 6,000 people during construction and create about 700 skilled jobs once in operation.

The Cartagena project is part of Repsol to adapt its facilities to produce clean transportation fuels, encouraging the use of biofuels (biodiesel) and improve energy efficiency and security, and reduce environmental impact.
