The Plenum of the City of Cartagena has appealed to all the people of Cartagena to participate in the demonstration in defense of the Tajo-Segura, to be held in Murcia from 17.30 am on March 18.
In a special meeting held this afternoon at the Palace Hall and chaired by Mayor Pilar Barreiro, the Plenary of the Municipal Corporation has approved a joint motion on behalf of the Tajo-Segura.
With this document, the City of Cartagena reiterates its commitment to defend this transfer and therefore opposing the reduction of water established by law and any date of expiry.
Also shows his rejection of any increase in the environmental flow that endangers or impairs the maintenance of the transfer.
According to the motion approved, the Tajo-Segura is the most cost-effective infrastructure of Spain in the last two years.
Not only has allowed the development of agriculture in the Mediterranean toe but contributes in a very positive trade balance of Spain, especially in horticulture.
The disappearance of the Tajo-Segura, as well as hamper the development of agriculture in the Region of Murcia, in Europe the most competitive and less subsidized, force 130,000 workers in this sector unemployment.
In this sense, the claim of the Draft Amendment of the Statute of Castilla La Mancha to modify, interpret and nullify the law regulating the Tajo Segura, focusing squarely on water planning attributed to state clearly considered unconstitutional.
Therefore, it is more important than ever to support the Tajo-Segura a resounding in the municipalities of the Region, and the condemnation of all those initiatives that threaten him, whether a through autonomous status or by decree.
The motion calls for their withdrawal of all the amendments, both the preamble and in the articles directly or indirectly involving the forfeiture the Tajo-Segura in 2015 or the progressive reduction of water to the Segura Basin.
Consequently, the City of Cartagena has agreed to address all deputies and senators in the district of the Region of Murcia urging them to cast their vote against any rule or provision that would cause the expiration of the Tajo-Segura and that means a reduction flow established by law, or endanger the viability.
The House has also required the National Government the implementation of new contributions to cover the legally-recognized "water deficit.
The threats to the Tajo-Segura Aqueduct are especially severe for Cartagena and its surroundings, where agriculture, industry and tourism is particularly relevant.
All these reasons warrant, according to the motion, supported by the people of Cartagena to the demonstrations organized to defend our right to survive using the surplus water to others.
The call issued by the Central Union of Irrigation Aqueduct Tajo-Segura is a great opportunity to show that the company knows the dimensions of that threat on the future of families, the municipality and the region.
