The Ministry of Environment and Rural and Marine has tendered the environmental restoration of the coastal edge of Paradise Beach in Cartagena (24/02/2009)

The Government delegate, Rafael González Tovar, announced this morning that the Department of Sustainability of the Coast and the Sea (Ministry of Environment and Rural and Marine), has tendered the environmental restoration of Paradise beach, municipal Cartagena.

The amount of this action is of 759,932 euros and a time schedule for completion of the work of seven months.

With this performance, which is part of the Plan E of the Government, will create 12 jobs.

González Tovar reported that the area where it will perform the action is with an approximate length of 883 meters and covers an area of approximately 12 hectares, is located at the southern end of the Mar Menor, including salt and Playa Honda Marchamalo is part of a protected natural area and the important habitats and species of fauna and flora belonging to the Natura 2000 network.

The project has three areas of action: The first is the reception and integration into the landscape that is the point of transition between the old salt with the urbanization of Playa Paraiso and occur mostly where access to the beach, with densely People and trails.

The second is the ecological restoration area in front of the salt in operation and in which all the forms of protection present.

And the third is the beach area and is the strip of beach located along the seafront area of operation.

The Government representative stated objectives of the project as follows:

• The landscape restoration and redevelopment of applications in areas degraded by public use activities or influence of other misuses.

• The recovery of vegetation cover in degraded areas by impacting activities.

• The redevelopment of the recreational areas associated with the beach through the proper installation of basic furniture, signage and interpretive elements in place to ensure the proper reordering of applications after completion of the restoration work.

• Conservation of ecosystem: Any measures to encourage use conservation and restoration of natural values and taking into account both the preservation measures during construction phase and subsequent monitoring and maintenance.

• The restoration of the morphology and highlight areas for action by the removal of aggregates, debris, filled with ancient sandy areas, naturalization of profiles on the shore, striking infrastructure removal and closure of access roads or inadequate.

Also respect the existence of habitats and plant communities present and will promote the colonization by other species.

You respect the original layout and width of the salt specks.

The actions also include the demolition of infrastructures that are occupying the Maritime Terrestrial Public Domain.

In addition, the removal of 34 cubic meters of rubble, all of them will be deposited in an authorized landfill.

And the removal of garbage and other waste, a total of 8.9 hectares with an estimated volume of waste from 14 cubic meters.

It will build a practicable path to walking and cycling track forming an interpretation and environmental education.

Also taken into account the recommendations of the Technical Guide for Accessibility for Disabled (ONCE Foundation) and the Accessibility Plan Spanish beaches (MARM).

The transition zone between the ancient salt and urbanization Playa Paraiso is projected visitor reception area and the main access to the beach.

It will build a bird observatory, which will be made accessible through the crosswalk, located in the northeast area of activity, close to the ponds in operation.

And that will be adapted for people with physical disabilities with access ramp and adapted in the interior area.

Finally, we carried out the refurbishment of the beach with the contribution of a total of 1,232 cubic meters of sand.

Be installed different types of information panels of the environmental values of the area and carry out the planting of tree species such as large-sized palm trees and shrub and herbaceous species such as sea lettuce and other.

González Tovar said that these actions are part of the policy of the Ministry of Environment and Rural and Marine to recover the Spanish coast to work with the regions and municipalities in the affected areas and carrying out the actions needed to improve of the coastal strip in compliance with environmental and landscape characteristics of each area and facilitate the use and enjoyment of the coast to all citizens.
