The current urban facade of Cartagena and the imprint left by its most emblematic buildings dating from a time of flourishing in the city in which the resurgence of mining led to a new bourgeoisie interested in being known his new status through their buildings.
This is the starting point of the book 'Eclecticism and Art Nouveau in Cartagena', written by José Godoy Nin de Cardona, Professor of History and Professor of Art History tutor of the UNED, and edited by the City of Cartagena, with a total of 500 copies aimed at all audiences, not only understood in the art, and will serve as teaching material for university students.
Councillor for Culture, Rosario Montero, has been responsible for the presentation of this book, highlighting the importance of the same to satisfy the curiosity of not only students but also those interested in knowing a little more about the history of the city through a series of buildings and their architects that form the urban facade of Cartagena.
The book's author, Jose Godoy, explained the structure itself, which begins with a description of the historical circumstances of the time (1868-1944), with the emergence of a new bourgeoisie who liked to show his new status, see and observed, and it commissioned a series of iconic buildings today that give the city modernist like Dorda House, Grand Palace Hotel or the very hall.
Easy reading, this manual also explains the architectural elements that define the two sides of the new style, eclecticism and modernism, such as the location of the buildings in prominent places, balconies and facades with balconies, skylights with its play of light, stairs spectacular and the new heraldic replacing the aristocracy, of which the city lacked.
'Eclecticism and Art Nouveau in Cartagena' is now available in all libraries at a price of 13.80 euros.
