The Director General of Planning, Evaluation and Environmental Control, Francisco José Espejo, praised the "commitment to the sustainable development of the Port Authority of Cartagena, whose president, Adrian Angel Viudes, presented a certificate of registration in the European Register EMAS.
According to Espejo, the Eco-Management and Audit Scheme was launched in 1995 for organizations on a voluntary basis, wish to evaluate and improve their performance in this area.
There are currently 18 companies in the Region of Murcia EMAS registered in the registry.
The responsible regional listed some of the advantages of this system, such as the continuous improvement of the company or organization, public communication of their progress through an Environmental Statement, which are reflected all their efforts, improved control and optimizing use of raw materials and energy.
It also has other positive aspects such as reducing expenditure on transport, storage and packaging, reducing the risk of accidents and, therefore, of the costs, increased worker training and the adoption of a active policy against the existing legislation and future environmental regulations may affect the company.
Mirror concluded that adherence to this system of international environmental management can ultimately "improve the image of the company towards its customers, management, employees, investors, media, advocacy groups, environmental and the general public. "
