The Infanta Dona Cristina has opened in the spring of Cartagena Alfonso XII of the new headquarters of the National Museum of Underwater Archaeology (ARQUA) designed by the architect Guillermo Vázquez Consuegra.
The event was also attended by the Minister of Culture, César Antonio Oliva, the government delegate in the Region of Murcia, Ángel González Tovar, the mayor of Cartagena, Pilar Barreiro, and the Minister of Culture, Pedro Alberto Cruz, among others.
ARQUA joins the landscape of next-generation museum with an exceptional range of activities and services.
This is the first public museum whose business focuses on underwater archeology, which shows visitors through a permanent exhibition, where they can learn what exactly the Underwater Cultural Heritage, how it protects, is excavated and preserved and what gives us knowledge about our past.
All illustrated with a selection of major archaeological materials preserved by the Museum, among which the remains of the Phoenician era vessels found in Mazarrón, an outstanding collection of elephant tusks also Phoenician times, a large group of amphorae several times, anchors, bars and other parts that are unique example of the richness and diversity of our heritage under the sea.
This is compounded by the unique architecture of its buildings and exhibition resource utilization based on the use of new technologies.
Sweep Pilar Mayor noted that this is an extraordinary complement of cultural and tourist city, and in a privileged place, along with other significant elements such as the Palace Hall, the Museum of the Roman Theatre and the Auditorium and future of Congress.
Barreiro also highlighted the fact that from Cartagena, not only want to expose, but also to disseminate and promote the rescue of the rich and still unknown underwater heritage.
The inhabitants of Cartagena and the rest of the region will have the opportunity to meet the museum free of charge, through some open days to be held from 27 to 30 November.
