Awareness and prevention against abuse of women (25/11/2008)

The City of Cartagena today also joined the international commemorations of International Day Against Violence Against Women, the reading of a manifesto of the doors of the Town Hall, by María Dolores Alcaraz Moreno, president of the Regional Federation of Women's Associations 'Mediterranean'.

In this text have been present members of the municipal corporation, with the mayor of Cartagena, Pilar Barreiro, and the Councillor for Women, Rosario Montero to the head.

After reading the manifesto, the Mayor has identified two constants in municipal policies that have been developing for years in the areas of women and education, such as awareness and prevention at schools.

Our City is a pioneer in working with women victims of domestic violence and many municipalities that have taken as an example and copy our comprehensive treatment programs of the problems in this area, from the care of women at first to collaboration with the various security forces, lawyers and psychologists, said Pilar Barreiro.

In any case, the mayor has emphasized that there are other culprits who are not abusers themselves and what they have to do is expose victims.

It should be noted that the City of Cartagena has been developing for years a social skills program in schools, which teaches primary school children to reject all violence, while more specifically, the Department of Women has up specific programs in the institutes to raise awareness and prevent the abuse of women.

COMBATING GENDER VIOLENCE IN DATA

The City of Cartagena has a Care Center and its women that has served a total of 460 women from January to October this year.

Of these, 231 were referred to Civic Center for Victims of Violence in Cartagena (CAVI), of which 105 had complained of mistreatment.

The psychologist at the center saw your bit for 160 women.

Another means available to the City Council to combat gender violence is the refuge, in which five women were admitted in 2008.

Two more women have gone to shelters in other parts of Spanish territory and another was installed in alternative accommodation.
