The mayor puts musealization Cartagena as an example of archaeological sites (24/11/2008)

The V International Congress of archaeological Musealisation was opened this morning with a speech by the Mayor, Pilar Barreiro, which highlighted the city of Cartagena as an example in the recovery of archaeological remains and its merger with the city's architecture .

As highlighted by the mayor, Cartagena has been the scene of pioneering work in creating archaeological museums, as Pedro San Martín Moro and Antonio Beltrán, but in recent times was the Agusteum the project that marked the beginning of the road we we has brought to the Roman Theatre.

In the communion between architecture and archeology continues to work in the city, with several projects of great depth.

One is the Archaeological Park windlass, a large area in which there are the Capitoline temple of the Roman city and where you are digging a villa and an arena, next to the hot springs.

The other major project is the adequacy of the assembly of two separate buildings for twenty centuries, the Roman Amphitheatre and the bullring was built on its remains.

The coexistence of these two buildings will be born a second major cultural complex that will preserve and explain the Roman building at the time that will enable the creation of a regional museum of contemporary art.

Finally, and to continue with the importance of Cartagena at the heart of culture and archeology, the mayor pointed out that this week, coinciding with the Congress, opens the National Museum of Underwater Archaeology in the port.

This afternoon, conference participants will be received at the Palace Hall, at 20.30 pm by the segunto deputy mayor, José Vicente Albaladejo.

Throughout the conference, which have enrolled about 250 students, experts and professionals in the field of archeology and architecture, will develop three lectures on Archaeology and the promotion of the territory, the boundaries between fields, architecture and intervention urban, and a final day of a more free, in which professionals can raise awareness and share their projects.

According to Montero Rosario, Cartagena has pioneered musealization archaeological sites, which is evident through the work of Pedro St. Martin in the 60's, and pursued by the organization of such events is the enhancement of our heritage, from the already established itself as the Roman Theatre or the other interpretation centers of the city, to projects that are underway, as the amphitheater and Windlass Hill.

This, according to Councillor, are also committed to cultural tourism that is growing in Cartagena.

The City has invested a year's work in organizing the Congress entitled Archaeology, historical discourse and local paths, and has enjoyed the cooperation of the City of Alcalá de Henares, a pioneer of the event in 2000, the Museum of History Barcelona, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, General Directorate of Fine Arts and the Technical University of Cartagena.

UPCT students participating in the conference will get free credits, in addition to completing his training with the papers.
