The Association of Naturalists in the Southeast and the Polytechnic University of Cartagena progress in the development of conservation actions of Tallante garbancillo (Astragalus nitidiflorus).
As the nuclei set in early 2008 have been remarkably successful, experiments are underway seed planting to better understand the biology of the species.
Conservation actions are part of the development collaboration agreement established with the Autonomous Community of Murcia (General Directorate of Natural Heritage and Biodiversity) and has in turn with financial support from the Ministry of Environment, Rural and Marine Affairs.
Garbancillo of Tallante (Astragalus nitidiflorus) is a small plant of the legume family (peas, beans, chickpeas) that occurs only in the Campo de Cartagena.
It is therefore a unique endemic.
This species was discovered in 1909 near the city of Cartagena, but reunited again until 2004, so it was thought to be extinct.
The threat level is such that the species is listed as Endangered by the National Catalogue of Endangered Species and the red book of plants considered Critically Endangered, the highest level of threat.
To minimize the risk of extinction and in order to obtain information on the management of the species that can be applied in subsequent recovery plans, ASEAN and the Polytechnic University of Cartagena under the supervision of the Autonomous Community of Murcia implanted in February 2008, 86 copies Reservations ANSE property located in the future Regional Park of La Muela-Cabo Tiñoso (Cartagena).
By tracking done has been possible to determine who survived approximately 37% of implanted samples (figure quite high if we consider the life cycle of the species) and is estimated to have produced more than 2,100 seeds in their first year.
Additionally, there have been new cores implementation experiences from planting seeds previously subjected to various treatments.
In total, 16 plots have been established with 25 seeds each (400 seeds) to better understand the germination of this species in the field.
It also plans to initiate a ANSE Land Stewardship Project, to involve the owners of the area in the conservation of the species.
With this goal has published a brochure in Castilian and English on the species
