Die Calderon entered the harbor of Cartagena and sighting an old copy off the coast of Cape Tiñoso (16/10/2008)

Late Thursday morning was found dead in the old boathouse Military Arsenal Cartagena Risso copy of which had entered the port a few days ago of the city, which on Monday had been taken from the same dock with the cooperation of fishermen and ANSE.

Since then, the Association had contacted all authorities and institutions that could have jurisdiction in the matter to remain attentive to the evolution of animal and try to act in the best possible way if it did not finally leave the bay of Cartagena.

In the morning the Arsenal Military personnel confirmed the presence of the pilot whale in the harbor again, as she swam and dived in the same area where he had taken on Sunday.

The Association carried out during the day yesterday on numerous occasions to the Autonomous Community, the Military Arsenal and the Fishermen's Association to coordinate again a device to capture the animal and transport it in the open sea water, which required making a specific transport was being prepared by the Fishermen's Association and ANSE and intended to be used as quickly as possible.

Paradoxically, ANSE sighted Wednesday afternoon an old copy of Risso's dolphins, which they call "white" for their color, which apparently swam alone in the southeast of Cape Tiñoso, over 1000 meters deep.

"White" had been photographed for the first time in July 2001 and had since been spotted and photographed on two other occasions off the coast of Cartagena (4 total), but never alone.

The animal was found a few minutes out of sight after a long dive.

A quick analysis of the photographs has confirmed that this is the animals themselves, and provides interesting information about the movements and longevity of this individual.

A quick analysis of the available images did not allow for the time being to identify the animal that died in the port of Cartagena with other animals spotted earlier in the costs of the Region.

ANSE now expects the results of the autopsy performed by the Center for Wildlife Recovery of the Autonomous Region to provide information to help determine the causes that led to this animal to the port, and why it has finished dying.

ANSE biologists and CIRCE who have observed the animal this afternoon have found that, as noted on Sunday, the animal was extremely thin, with a large number of external parasites.

The pilot whale, which measured about 3 m, had severely worn teeth, probably due to his advanced age.

Over the next few days, the boat will sail Else off the coast of the Region for more information on the populations of cetaceans and seabirds in a program that has the support of the Biodiversity Foundation and VOLCAM Program.

ANSE reiterates its gratitude to all those individuals and entities have expressed interest and participated in recovery efforts for this animal, and remember that in almost all cases, the whales and dolphins beaching on our beaches or debilitating symptoms appear arrive at the shore and in very poor condition, and his death is almost inevitable despite their recovery efforts.
