The Department of Social Care and UPCT have launched a joint program of shared housing and older college students in the municipality for the new academic year.
This program is part of the Volunteer and Municipal Plan is based on mutual aid and intergenerational solidarity, which aims to answer the one hand, the company and support needs of older people, and the other to the accommodation needs of university students during the academic year.
The Department of Social Services already has a stock of over 50 residents in the municipality concerned in this way to share a flat.
Once progress in enrollment of university students in Cartagena and defining their needs, determine appropriate combinations for a better living.
The older should have adequate housing to student needs and self-sufficient staff.
Young people must also meet certain requirements to participate in this initiative.
Older people provide, through this program, free accommodation at home and in return receive student collaboration, task management and monitoring in general.
The last census conducted on elderly Cartagena reveals that about 6,000 of them are living alone.
In addition, more than two hundred people linked to the University, who share classrooms with young people.
Social Care will offer financial assistance to seniors who take advantage of this program, by way of common expenses that may result from living with the student.
This shared housing program materialized last May with the signing of an agreement between the Social Care Councillor, Antonio Calderon, and the Vice Chancellor for Students UPCT, Francisco Martínez.
