Greenpeace and ANSE call for the urgent return of marine reserves in the waters of the Region of Murcia (24/07/2008)

Cartagena, Spain - Both environmental groups note a significant degradation of the seabed in the region.

It's been two years since Greenpeace and ANSE starting submitted a proposal for the declaration of a network of marine reserves in the Murcia Region, a regional initiative that the Government undertook to implement but to date there has been no progress.

"We do not serve more promises that remain a dead letter.

The Murcia region is deficient in well-managed marine protected areas to stop the degradation of its coastline, "said Pedro Garcia, a spokesman for ANSE.

Over the past three months, the Greenpeace ship Arctic Sunrise has crossed the Mediterranean to report the effects of overfishing, particularly of red tuna, destruction of coastal habitats, urban development, pollution and to demand urgent measures of protection marine ecosystems.

Since last July 18 in waters located in Murcia, where he has explored, with advice from the University of Murcia, the continental shelf, an area which has the largest marine productivity.

With the help of an underwater camera capable of imaging at a depth of 500 meters and a robot controlled from the deck that reaches 250 meters, the two organizations have established how human activity has degraded the seabed up to unsustainable levels, especially the effect of the trawlers, which have "carved out" literally fund large areas between 100 and 300 meters deep.

"The five black dots that contribute most highly urbanized brick and half joins Murcia coast coastal habitat degradation by invasive species like the case of Caulerpa racemosa or pollution.

Projects like El macropuerto Gorguel and Cope Marine macrourbanización should be abandoned, "he pointed Pilar Marcos, head of the Greenpeace campaign Coast.

Greenpeace and ANSE demand, in addition to the suspension of designated projects and infrastructure in coastal areas, new measures to ensure the recovery of marine ecosystems of Southeast Spain.

Marine reserves are instruments that have already proved their effectiveness in ensuring sustainable management of fisheries and conservation of plants, animals and marine habitats, from which it depends.

"Currently, the region has only a marine reserve, the Cabo de Palos.

The dives of our underwater robots have served to confirm the severe impact of trawling on the funds in the region, "said Sebastian Losada, head of Greenpeace's Oceans campaign.

"The declaration of a network of marine reserves is urgent not only for the recovery of these funds, but the very survival of the local fishing industry," concluded Losada.
