The Government delegate, Rafael González Tovar, this morning a new boat SASEMAR that will improve the safety off the coast of Murcia, providing more coverage for surveillance and maritime rescue.
The presentation has also had the assistance of Cartagena sea captain, Alberto Martín Castilla, and the head of the Maritime Rescue Centre in that city, Miguel Belmonte Nieto, along with others responsible for those tasks at sea.
The vessel launched today will replace the "Salvamar Alcor", which has been moved to Melilla, after rendering their services in our coastal waters over the past ten years.
This new vessel, which is 21 meters (six more than previous rescue unit) and 5.5 in width, is the "Salvamar Mimosa," which, like all ships of this type gets its name from a star.
Specifically "Mimosa" is the name of the second of the stars that make up the Southern Cross constellation.
SASEMAR The new boat is equipped with two engines of 1,044 kW (1,400 hp) and reaches a top speed of 38 knots and a range of 400 miles.
It also has design innovations that make it especially suitable for emergencies and incidents (towing, technical assistance, transportation of personnel, collection of objects hazardous to navigation, etc..) And has the characteristics needed to act as quickly as required (high speed, high maneuverability and shallow draft.)
During the presentation of this vessel, the delegate of the Government and other authorities present did a brief tour with the same port waters of Cartagena.
Completion thereof, Rafael González Tovar has made a visit to the Maritime Rescue Coordination, from which port traffic control and coordination of emergency at sea, and the headquarters of Maritime.
During his visit to the port of Cartagena to bring this ship, the government delegate highlighted the work of providing relief and rescue Salvage and stressed the importance of this service has more and better means in an area like the coastal Murcia where the transit of large vessels of different types join the movement of recreational vessels based in the ports of the region.
Moreover, Gonzalez Tovar stressed the importance of that at sea SASEMAR units are complemented by the adoption by the users of pleasure craft of all necessary security measures.
