The Municipal Institute of Social Services Cartagena will be a little closer to the citizens with the new structure of Social Work Units (UTS), which is responsible for social care in a given geographical area.
As explained by the councilman of Social Care, Antonio Calderon, the increasing number of people throughout the municipality has led to the need to expand ways to get citizens of Cartagena to enjoy a better quality of life.
So with this new reorganization, the two centers of social services in the municipality (located in the building of the Miraculous Medal and the Plaza of Spain) will be responsible for UTS 16, up from 10 today, eight of them attached to the Centre 1 and eight at center 2.
This increase in Social Work Units will lead to a decrease in the ratio of people served in each of them, from the 20,656 that attended in each UTS in 2003 to 12,910 to be addressed with this new zoning.
It also increases the focal points in each of the UTS, from the current 15 to 28.
This will be achieved through agreements with Primary Care and neighborhood associations, which will allow in doctors' offices and social facilities can be offered the services offered by the Municipal Institute.
The aim, according to Calderon, even closer to citizens in need and provide better service quality.
Along with this new zoning will also extend the personal care of these UTS.
Thus, we have hired six new social workers to meet the 16 work units (each is headed by one of these workers who perform the work with a team of professionals), as well as three new vehicles to assist to rural areas and technical facilities.
With more staff and new reorganization each UTS will manage about 500 cases, compared with 800 who managed to date.
The commissioning of this new organization has a budget of 300,000 euros.
