The cultural center Luzzy Ramón Alonso was the scene of the official commemoration of 2008 as the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue, an event organized by the city of Cartagena, which took place yesterday afternoon before an audience of two hundred people.
The starting point of the event was a video projection of about twenty minutes.
'United in diversity' is a DVD on which it is described by all municipal activities related to the cultural integration of the hand of the protagonists, mostly immigrants.
Each has had their experiences and programs in which he participated, almost all related to education and culture (computer courses, sports activities, solidarity ...).
The video led to the intervention of the mayor of Cartagena, Pilar Barreiro, who stressed the openness and intercultural city.
Barreiro noted that about 14.7% of the population of Cartagena is an immigrant, which means that the municipality has been and is a welcome example of cultural integration.
For its part, the adviser of International Cultural Cooperation of the Ministry of Culture, Josefina Lopez Conejo, made a point about the role of culture as a vehicle for the integration of peoples, who should use it to establish relations of equality between them.
Subsequently, Aouatif Oubai and Luis Antonio Morocho, representatives of immigrant associations in the municipality, read a statement by the Intercultural Living in the city of Cartagena.
Both noted that immigrants who arrive are willing to integrate, to participate in social and cultural life of the city.
It is very important for the association as a good way to open up to the host society.
The ceremony ended with the intervention of Jordi Savall, musician and cultural ambassador of the European Union.
Savall defends the role of music as an integrator of different cultures, to be able to establish communication between peoples than differences.
The musician said to be closer to other cultures different from our own curiosity and away from prejudices.
To do this, performed several musical pieces from the ancient Christian tradition, Jewish and Arab, three cultures that lived in our country and are an example of intercultural dialogue which this year takes place.
