The flotilla of minesweepers of NATO takes a breather in Cartagena (04/06/2008)

Captain of the Spanish Armada and current Commander of the Group of NATO's Countermine Actions (Standing NATO Mine Counter Measures Group 2, SNMCMG2), Antonio Martorell Lacave, visited the Palace Hall of Cartagena, where he was welcomed by Deputy Mayor, Agustín Guillén, due to the arrival of a flotilla of minesweepers to the naval base in the city, where they remained until the 13th of June.

These seven vessels whose crews enjoy your stay in town for the rest of the crews, especially the crew of the Diana, who has a year sailing without seeing their families, taking the rest of the good weather for sightseeing and know Cartagena surroundings, as noted by the commander Martorell Lacave.

The purpose of the visit is twofold: on one hand increase the relations with NATO countries, and proceed to another baton of command of the force, held in Cartagena on 11 June so that Lacave Antonio Martorell, who took command of the Group on 5 June last year, will be relieved by the Commander of the German Navy Eike Tammen, fulfilling annual rotations already programmed control.

The Countermine Action Partnership of NATO's main mission is to keep the sea lanes cleared of mines, and develop other diplomatic missions-oriented work they are more complex in countries outside of NATO, as is the case of Algeria Morocco which have been recently, and maritime traffic control.

The scope of development of this work in the past year has been, during the first half, in the Eastern Mediterranean and Black Sea, and during the second quarter in the Mediterranean closer to the Spanish coast.

The SNMCMG-2 is under the operational command of the Maritime Component Commander of NATO Headquarters in Naples and is made here by the command and support ship DIANA (Spanish Armada) to be relieved by the MOSEL (German Navy ) on June 11 and five minesweepers of five nations of the Atlantic Alliance: PIT (Spanish Armada), Erdemli (Turkish Navy), BAD RAPPENAU (German Navy), KALLISTA (Greek Navy) and Croton (Italian Navy).
