The Culture Ministry has given a major boost to Mandarache Young Reader Award organized by the municipality of Cartagena and recognized the unique work being done in the field of reading promotion.
Proof of this is the cooperation agreement it has signed the Mayor, Pilar Barreiro, with the Director General of Ministry Paper, Rogelio Blanco, within the National Plan for the Promotion of Reading.
As explained by the councilman of Youth, Javier Herrero, this is a special agreement, it is not unusual for the Ministry sign such agreements directly with municipalities, but their partners are often regional governments.
This way of exception, the Ministry aims to single out support for the project Mandarache 'Young Reader Prize', launched in 2005 by the Youth Council as an innovative and effective approach which embodies local objectives of the Development Plan Reading the Ministry in the field of promoting reading habits among young people, added the councilman.
The agreement embodied in the contribution by the Ministry of € 20,000 for 2008, as payment for travel, accommodation fees and visiting authors and lecturers throughout the year within the framework Cartagena Mandarache Award.
The Mandarache has become one of the most important cultural initiatives in the region.
In just three editions, Mandarache Award has created a strong network of committees read hundreds of young people between 15 and 30 years (2,000 in this issue).
The formula 'Mandarache' is to privilege the act of reading, to avoid patronage and the conventions of children's literature and, above all, work for the promotion of reading habits that make a positive attitude toward reading beyond the activity read: meetings with authors, book signings, talks, cultural use of new technologies ...
using language and instruments close to the young.
This Mandarache Prize will close with a visit to Cartagena Gustavo Martín Garzo to collect the prize Mandarache in the presence of hundreds of young people who have chosen the novel My dear Eva as the winner of '08 at a gala Mandarache created by director Soriano Luisma scene.
According to Councilman Javier Herrero, in our country Mandarache initiative must be considered only so far a unique experience which in turn we can find in other countries (France, Italy ...) and can set up a 'European model' of promote reading among young people.
