Cartagena tomorrow Friday commemorates the centenary of one of its iconic buildings, the 'Grand Hotel' with the launch of 'Celestino Martinez and the Grand Hotel' and the opening of two exhibitions, at 20:00 pm in the Palace Hall.
The 'Grand Hotel, a modernist building built in 1916 and is signed by the architect Victor Beltrí, was conceived and promoted by the mining industry Celestino Martinez.
Moreover, it remains as an example of the greatness of architecture in the heart of Cartagena's historic port city set.
The memorial project was coordinated and led by the architect Jose Manuel Chacón Bulnes and has the sponsorship of the City of Cartagena, the Ministry of Culture and Spokesperson, Cajamurcia Foundation and other organizations and institutions in the Region.
In this regard, the Director General of Cultural Heritage, Maria Comas, said that "the commemoration of the centenary of the 'Grand Hotel' helps to keep putting in value the Cartagena modernist architecture, one of the cultural references of the region and tourist attraction of a city that has become in recent years an example of heritage and cultural recovery. "
The exhibition, one of old photographs and a collective of artists Cartagena, will remain open until next March 31 and are part of the celebrations of the 'Year of Modernism in Cartagena'.
Thus, the Palace Hall in a show he has curated photographer Juan Manuel Diaz Burgos, houses a collection of photographs, never before exhibited, made in the early twentieth century by Miguel Martinez, son of Celestino Martinez, including photographs of the 'Big Hotel ', numerous genre pictures of the city and the surrounding area, including Cabo de Palos, as well as others made during trips to cities like Granada Martinez, Melilla and Tunisia.
Also, a parallel exhibition that brings together various works of painting, sculpture or video which involved a dozen artists Cartagena, showing, through his creations, his particular vision of 'Grand Hotel' and the Cartagena early twentieth century.
Specifically, they met works of Abel F. Ros, Antonio Gómez Ribelles, Carlos Jose Perez Gomez, Julian Contreras, Domingo Llor, Fernando Saenz de Elorrieta, José Carlos Ñíguez, Pedro Diego Pérez Casanova, Nicole and Enrique Palacios Navarro Carter.
The initiative is complemented by the book 'Celestino Martinez and the Grand Hotel', in which the architect Jose Manuel Chacón Bulnes has conducted extensive research on the history, construction, customs and anecdotes of the building.
For it has collected information in different files of Cartagena and Murcia, where it has located original project documents and plans, photographs, postcards and newspaper articles.
