A doctoral thesis at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Murcia (UMU) by Sandra Jimenez Rejon has discovered the existence of inorganic elements in breast milk of women living in the industrial zone of Cartagena that exceed those recommended by the World concentrations Health (WHO).
The findings of the study, which has been rated as outstanding cum laude, added that the level of such concentrations, in some cases, may constitute a risk to the population;
especially for pregnant mothers and their children.
By contrast, the thesis also points out, the level of PFOA in the milk of mothers studied is below the maximum permissible concentrations laid down by the European Food Safety Authority.
To carry out this research, the author analyzed 77 samples of milk from mothers living in two zones, one of which, industrial and mining, and other agricultural.
The doctoral thesis was supervised by professors from the University of Murcia Maria Dolores Perez Motes Prisons and Miguel Guzman.
