During the months of October and November, the Association for the recovery of the native forest -ARBA- of Cartagena, has proceeded to the forest restoration from burned slopes of the mountains of Galeras and Algameca girl.
In several workshops, conducted during these two months, it was carried out planting more than 1,000 native trees and shrubs in these mountains.
The actions are part of the outreach efforts of Europe Tetraclinis LIFE-project for the conservation of Cartagena cypress forests, a habitat as a priority in the European Union for being exclusively, within the European continent, in the coastal mountains Cartagena (from Roldan to Calblanque).
Galeras and Algameca Girl, owned by the Spanish Armada had been reforested with Aleppo pine after the civil war and had suffered two separate fires in 2003 and 2012. The objective of the proposal is to recover the forest that originally existed in our mountains before being destroyed by human exploitation continued for several centuries.
So we proceeded to the plantation of about 400 seedlings cypress Cartagena (Tetraclinis articulata), along with shrubs that typically accompany this conifer such as cornical (Periploca angustifolia), mastic (Pistacia lentiscus), the arto (Maytenus senegalensis) or the black hawthorn (Rhamnus lycioides).
In areas with better moisture conditions and guidance have planted more demanding species such as strawberry trees (Arbutus unedo), oaks (Quercus rotundifolia) and juniper (Juniperus oxycedrus).
The whole plant has been released by the Association of Southeast Naturalists.
With the recovery of native forests of cypress Cartagena is to increase biodiversity and the amount of wildlife that the mountain can support and serve as an effective means of preventing forest fires, as native forests, unlike the pine forests reforestation, are much more resistant to fire and are able to recover very quickly after the passage of fire.
Forest restoration works have been carried out over several days and with different groups, such as the one carried out last Saturday November 21 with a group of 50 volunteers who carried out the planting of 300 trees.
Besides this, they have conducted workshops with specific groups such as school students Carthago Spartaria La Palma or employees of the company Abengoa and planting carried out in gangs reduced by association members in areas of poorer access .
Moreover, soon it will proceed with the direct seeding of thousands of seeds of palm (Chamaerops humilis) and in the spring will be carried out maintenance work to prepare the ground for the summer and get the highest rate of survival possible .
The shares have had the collaboration of the Spanish Armada and the Association of Southeast Naturalists (ANSE) and the company Abengoa.
The aim of the association is to continue in successive seasons with the restoration of our ecosystems most degraded by human action.
