The Ministry of Water, Agriculture and Environment recently held a conference to present the work done under the project 'LIFE Tetraclinis Europe', which aims to preserve, improve and expand the area of ​​forests called cypress Cartagena (Tetraclinis articulata ), which is listed as 'priority habitat' at Community level and as 'very rare' at national level.
This habitat is typical of North Africa in Murcia and has its only representation in Europe.
It is distributed by mining mountains of Cartagena-La Union in less than 600 hectares, of which over 64 percent were affected by the fire in August 2011 surface.
The project started in June 2014 and includes actions such as removing invasive alien species and empowerment of indigenous sharing the habitat, repair roads, restoration of mining to empty, preventing and combating the loss of genetic diversity, germplasm collection breeding and forestry and grazing control, among others.
Among the speakers of the first day Mchich Derak intervened, forester of the Moroccan forestry administration, who spoke of the 'ecological and participatory forest of northern Morocco Tetraclinis Restoration', and Dr. Santiago Fernandez, professor of Paleontology the Faculty of Biology of the University of Murcia, who considered it proven that Tetraclinis since mid-Holocene in the Iberian Southeast, according to various research based on the presence of fossil wood.
In the conference's actions disclosure to school and residents of the area they were also exposed to publicize the importance and ecological value of this habitat.
The said project has a budget of 1,544,000 euros, of which the EU finances 68.98 percent.
The implementation period runs until July 2018. It is coordinated by the Office of Social and Economic Promotion of Environment and partners included the University of Murcia, the City of Cartagena, the Sierra Minera Foundation and the Association of Southeast Naturalists.
