Researchers at the Faculty of Business of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT), Carmelo Reverte, Juan Gabriel Cegarra, and doctoral Eduardo Gomez have won awards in the national congress of the Spanish Association of Accounting and Business Administration ( AECA) held in Cartagena by a study on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in Murcia SMEs.
AECA has recognized the quality and scientific contribution of the paper entitled 'The influence of corporate social responsability practices on organizational performance: Evidence from Eco-Responsible Spanish firms'.
In it, teachers Murcia conclude that companies with best practices in CSR have higher levels of innovation and organizational performance.
According to one of the study authors, Carmelo Reverte, the effect of CSR on competitive success "occurs not only directly, but indirectly through the promotion of an innovation culture in the company."
For this, they reviewed aspects of CSR such as reconciling work and family life, improving the quality of life for employees, respect for the rights of consumers, interaction and dialogue with key stakeholders, and the introduction of procedures that contribute to environmental preservation.
Teachers chose this subject because of the importance attached to CSR in business "as a key factor in terms of competitiveness."
They claim that to date most of the research that has been done in this regard, have focused on larger companies.
"In large companies, the dissemination of information on CSR is much more settled.
However, in the field of small and medium enterprises, CSR is still largely unknown and is seen in many cases as an expense rather than as an investment, "says Reverte.
Hence the study by researchers at the Polytechnic of Cartagena for which were based on a survey of those responsible for adhering Murcia CSR SME Social Pact for the Environment of the Region of Murcia, which includes arises to more committed to sustainability and environmental preservation companies.
Finally, teachers believe that more companies should invest in Corporate Social Responsibility as a form of social commitment to employees, customers, suppliers and society in general.
"We believe that SMEs may be able to take quick advantage of new market niches for products and services that incorporate social and environmental benefits and, thus, achieve competitive differentiation," they add.
