Heavy rains in Cartagena in early September have been the signal for the start of the planting chamomile tailings, a botanical jewel of the port environment threatened.
Since earlier this year, the Port Authority of Cartagena is collaborating with the School of Agricultural Engineers of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena in the conservation project of this endangered species, which has the support of the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry of Agriculture , Food and Environment.
One of the most important actions of this project took place last spring, when three new towns chamomile tailings were introduced in the Cala del Bolete Grande Algameca Chica and La Punta de Gables, in order to connect both ecologically only European populations of the species located in Cartagena, one in Punta de La Azohía and another on the island of tailings.
In the three chosen areas chamomile thousand copies that had been grown in nurseries School of Agricultural Engineers has transplanted in La Palma.
Now in September, after the first rains after the driest months of the year, hundreds of new seedlings of chamomile have already begun to be born.
However, these young populations chamomile to be reinforced by planting thousands of seeds to increase their chance of survival and getting it can be established over time.
But for this enforcement action it is essential to have the rain, because the seeds must lay on the ground enough moisture to germinate.
In addition to this conservation action in the habitat of the species, a batch of seeds from each wild population has been stored in the Germplasm Bank of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena, to safeguard the long term the greatest genetic diversity of the species .
Alongside these actions are also developing outreach activities to raise awareness of the species and its ecological significance, as the distribution by the Port Authority of Cartagena de brochures among cruise passengers who visit the city.
Furthermore, it is finalizing the publication of a fairytale and a technical monograph on the species and the development of a promotional video using the Production Center of Digital Content UPCT.
All these materials will be presented in the Technical Seminar conservation project chamomile tailings to be held in late November at the Polytechnic University of Cartagena.
