The exoskeleton prototype being developed by researchers at the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) within the European project Exolegs (Exoskeleton Legs for Elderly Persons) will be tested this fall in a nursing home in Cieza.
The development allows the elderly with some type of muscle atrophy or disabilities to perform actions such as scrolling motion, sitting, standing or climbing stairs.
Researchers Neurotechnology group, Control and Robotics (Neurocor) UPCT, coordinated by Professor Juan Lopez Coronado, involved in the design and manufacture of basic prototype of an exoskeleton that will improve mobility among older people, including those with some or paraplegic type of muscle atrophy.
This prototype represents a substantial advance the project Exoskeleton Legs for Elderly Persons, which UPCT participates with leading researchers and practitioners from Sweden, UK, Switzerland, Germany and Spain.
The Exo-legs directed by UPCT researcher Juan Lopez Coronado project is funded by the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism and the European Commission through the Joint AAL (Ambient Assisted Living Joint Programme).
The project, whose reference is AAL-010000-2012-15, is funded with 392,490 euros.
