Tests carried out at a residence of Velez Rubio for Campus Mare Nostrum thesis show that L-carnitine slows cognitive decline physiological and pathological aging
Studies for a thesis carried out in the framework of Campus of International Excellence Mare Nostrum have managed to stop the intensity of physical and mental fatigue in elderly women, using a nutritional supplement based on L-Carnitine.
It is an amino acid involved in energy production in the cell and to be beneficial in diseases related fatigue and cognitive impairment.
These findings are part of the doctoral thesis defended by Cristina Gonzalez Aguirre and directed by Ignacio Martínez González-Moro, of the University of Murcia and Encarna Aguayo Gimenez, of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT).
Thesis trials have been conducted in the RECOPEMA (Regional Residence for the Elderly) residence, located in Vélez Rubio (Almería).
Thirty-five men and women have received for two grams of L-carnitine against another placebo group.
The study was carried out for four months.
The administration of this amino acid slows cognitive decline in both men and women, but only manages to stop the intensity of fatigue in older women, not men, possibly related to an insufficient dose, according to Aguirre.
Upon completion of the tests, Cristina Aguirre, internist medical profession has found that the administration of L-carnitine, both men and women, slows the disease, mild or moderate as physiological deterioration cognitive decline associated with aging.
The L-carnitine is mainly found in red meat and is also marketed as a food supplement.
The thesis, entitled "Effect of supplementation of L-carnitine on the nature and severity of fatigue and cognitive function in an elderly population", has been defended at the Faculty of Medicine of Murcia and has received the highest rating Excellent Cum Laude.
