To mark the World Day to Combat Desertification, held this Wednesday, June 17, the Polytechnic University of Cartagena recalled that features a 'Transnational Campus in desertification and water efficiency' framing several international projects to address water scarcity by wastewater treatment and training of African researchers in sustainable use of resources.
Twenty students of the Maghreb and the Middle East have made in recent months in the research group of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena in Management, Utilization and Soil and Water Reuse and the Chemical and Process Engineering.
At the same time, many teachers have participated UPCT within the Tempus-project coordinated Noria Angel Face and Javier Bayo, in training in research techniques and management of water scarcity in several Moroccan universities.
Collaboration on these issues has been extended to universities in Algeria, Egypt, Turkey, Iran, Lebanon, Burkina Faso, Benin and Senegal.
Batteries for treating waste water
UPCT researchers are perfecting, with funding from the Transnational Campus, fuel cells low cost allows simultaneous wastewater treatment and electricity production.
The research group directed by Francisco Hernandez has developed materials ten times cheaper than currently using these devices based on electrochemical reactions, increasing efficiency in both wastewater treatment and production of reusable energy by the purification system itself.
Also they are developed, along with the University of Murcia and the University of Almería, a fuel cell microalgae that also treat sewage water and generate energy, CO2 capture, biodiesel and bioethanol.
On drought alert
Within the Transnational Campus in desertification and water efficiency, the research group Water Management UPCT led by Sandra García Galiano, ASSET has led the European project, environmental and economic accounting of water in the Segura Basin , and he has collaborated with several African countries in the study of the impact of climate change on the spread of desertification.
Precision measurements and management measures to reduce the vulnerability of the basin by the ASSET project proposals, which, together with the Polytechnic of Cartagena and its spin-off Water Future, also involved the Segura basin and Company SAMUI France, were collected by the European Commission as an example of good practice in its guidance document on water balances.
The company created by the Future Water UPCT also studies the risk of desertification in the Peninsula developing a warning system and drought monitoring through satellite images.
"Desertification is dependent on climatic factors but also of our vulnerability if we do not adapt," explains the researcher Sergio Contreras.
He who wants something, something it costs you
Campus Border is an action of Campus Mare Nostrum 37/38 project, recognized as an international excellence and funded by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Universities Strengthening within the subprogram.
The World Day to Combat Desertification is celebrated on June 17 worldwide.
With the slogan "He who wants something, something it costs you, invest in healthy soil ', this year's celebration focuses on achieving global food security through sustainable food systems.
