Marine Reserve Cabo Palos is about young people with awareness workshops (03/06/2015)

The City Council and the Association Columbares, coinciding with the 20th anniversary of the declaration of this reserve, have developed a program of activities that will be developed over the coming weeks to raise awareness of the value of these spaces and the importance of preservation

The City of Cartagena and Columbares Association have launched a series of awareness workshops with young people of Cartagena, on the Marine Reserve of Cabo de Palos-Hormigas Islands, which celebrates its 20th anniversary.

During the past week activities were held in the Hospitality and Tourism CIFP and Hesperides, with trainees guides and tour assistance, shipping, fishing, boating and coastal fishing, and this week continues in the youth program Implica2 .

It is an initiative of the City Council and Columbares with a program of activities focused on the declaration of this marine reserve and beneficial defects and it has had on fishing (catch increase, weights and sizes, etc.) on the marine environment (improvement of habitats, increased biodiversity) and society (revaluation of artisanal fisheries, opportunities for ecotourism, etc.).

Taking advantage of the anniversary of its declaration, has designed a participatory journey to awareness and information about the Marine Reserve of Cabo de Palos- Islands Ants in our coast and to this end will take place during the coming week, workshops and film -forum directed towards promoting the visibility and social value of the marine reserve and vision as spaces of benefits and opportunities still little known by the public, it must be disclosed to increase their value to society.

Workshops will be meetings with civic associations for the dissemination of the values ​​of the Marine Reserves, where he will explain what are the marine reserves, which values ​​are and their importance for the conservation of marine and regeneration of fishery resources biodiversity, emphasizing the specific case of Cape Palos- Islands Ants.

As for the film club, the short-film Back to the Future, which covers the history and tradition of artisanal fisheries in the Southeast Iberian Mediterranean coast will be screened.

Through the voices and the personal stories of the fishermen themselves, highlights the problems of the artisanal fisheries sector, it evolves over decades, fishermen expectations for the future and the role potential marine protected areas as a management tool and preservation of the environment and fisheries.
