The UPCT addresses the importance of the regeneration of soil for the growth of productive activity (24/04/2015)

The working sessions organized by the Life + project for the rehabilitation of mining landscapes, which have been held since last Wednesday at the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) have concluded today addressing the economic importance of soil remediation previously contaminated by activities mining or industrial.

The closing keynote address has pronounced Professor at the University of Santiago de Compostela, Felipe Macias, considered an international leader in this field.

Macias has shown progress since the Galician institution through innovative technology for the rehabilitation of soils that have suffered pollution through the use of "Tecnosols" which are created from waste.

Current remediation techniques are good in many respects, but insufficient because they allow you to create a stable ground, if it be possible if amendments were applied in these cases, explained the professor.

In his opinion, the application of this technology, not only in mining environments, can help restore a contaminated space, minimizing risks to human and ecosystem health, and even increase production where contaminated soils exist today only.

Socio-economic needs require us to greatly increase agricultural production capacity while avoiding deterioration that carry all activities, has reported.

The Life + Rehabilitation contaminated by exploiting different residues (MIPOLARE) Draft mining landscapes has made over three days workshop Post-Mined Polluted Landscapes: Risks and Reclamation Techniques which have gathered more than fifty researchers and practitioners different countries, with attendees from Turkey, Canada, France, Australia, Colombia, among others, with the aim of investigating a sustainable alternative for the recovery of mineral soils.

This meeting of scientists, researchers and professionals has allowed analysis of the current situation of the mining soils and exchange of the latest advances in experience and knowledge of technologies and actions for the establishment of possible policy measures for environmental rehabilitation and landscape these degraded environments.

This workshop was organized by the Research Group GARSA (Management, Use and Recovery of Soil and Water) directed by Professor Angel Face.
