The Faculty of Business UPCT hosts from next Monday, April 20, and throughout the week the first Conference of Economy and Sustainable Development.
This is an event that will bring together experts in economics, environment, urban development and agriculture around the concept of sustainability and commitment to economic growth linked to environmental respect and social inclusion.
The program of this conference includes participation as speakers of directors of Industry, Tourism, Enterprise and Innovation, and Agriculture and Water, Juan Carlos Ruiz and Adela Martinez-Cache, respectively.
In addition, it will end with a visit to the site of the multinational Sabic, in La Aljorra (Cartagena) and Repsol refinery in tailings.
The director of the conference and Dean of the Faculty, Miguel Tobarra, emphasizes the importance of economics as a crucial factor for sustainable development.
"Economic growth is not incompatible with respect for the environment and fairer distribution of wealth.
And there are two key elements that can contribute to sustainable economic growth and development: the demand of citizens and technological progress, "he explains.
The current context of reviving the Spanish economy provide interest favors a conference that will count in its opening day with the participation of Eduardo Garcia, director of Corporate Responsibility at Repsol.
"The energy sector is strategic for sustainable development.
Any economic process needs energy to a greater or lesser extent and cost of it partly determines the competitiveness of companies, "says Miguel Tobarra.
Theirs is not the only intervention in this event by representatives of the business world.
On Wednesday, April 22, will be a panel discussion focused on the sustainability of the industrial sector to be attended by executives of Sabic, Bolea Group and Marnys-Martínez Nieto and moderated by Pablo Hernández, president of COEC.
"A balanced and sustainable economic growth is something that concerns the whole society.
Possible adjustments in economic sectors is something that has occurred throughout history and will occur in the future.
And awareness reaches all levels in the business arena too, although it has more difficulties to make some adjustments, "says Tobarra.
Cartagena, sustainable city
In addition to discussions about the company, chairing CROEM president, José María Albarracín, and sustainability in the industrial sector, which will take place in sessions on Wednesday and Thursday, the conference will focus on the city of Cartagena.
