On Sunday 15, residents of the Los Popos, near Canteras (Cartagena), have planted a hundred native trees and shrubs to transform one of the gardens of the area in a small patch of native forest, where the sabina mora (Tetraclinis articulata) represents one of the most numerous species and ecological value.
The plant has been ceded by the nursery of the Southeastern Association of Naturalists in Bº de La Concepción, and land preparation and aftercare helps the Department of Environment of the City of Cartagena.
In addition to juniper berries have been planted arbutus, mastic, buckthorn, palmettos and lavenders.
Most species are shrubs and small trees of medium and large, characteristic of the best preserved areas of the Sierra de Cartagena, and accompanying juniper thickets of blackberry providing shelter and food for wildlife in small fleshy fruits.
Lavender, besides providing beauty and enhance the landscape, provides food for bees and other insects, and can be used to make tea.
The native trees and shrubs to replace some of the exotic vegetation that was planted in the area for years and has been withdrawn by the city of Cartagena at the request of neighbors and ANSE, due to its poor condition and poor growth.
Have survived numerous examples of Aleppo pine, tetraclinis, olive and fig trees among others, and later removed and replace some other exotic plants such as yuccas and brachichitos.
To ensure the survival and growth of trees and shrubs drip irrigation will be provided during the first years, which may be later removed completely due to lower requirements regarding native plants species used so far.
The maintenance of this garden is made possible by the participation of some locals.
At the other end of this development is located one of the most interesting indigenous gardens of the town of Cartagena for their species richness and diversity, and was built on an old dump thanks to the participation of residents and the Association of Naturalists of the Southeast.
The service of Parks and Gardens of the City of Cartagena is increased here in recent years the number of species with the introduction of wild flowering plants.
Sunday activity is part of the outreach activities of the Project Life Tetraclinis Europe, coordinated by the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia, and in which the City of Cartagena involved, the Southeastern Association of Naturalists, University of Murcia the Sierra Minera, which is funded by the European Union Foundation.
