A thesis commitment to promote the city and its immediate neighborhood to attract cruise vessels (09/03/2015)

At present it is necessary to promote both the port city of Cartagena as its 'hinterland tourism', ie the geographical area likely to be visited scale duration of the cruise.

This is one of the conclusions of the doctoral thesis "Cruise ship traffic in the Spanish Mediterranean and the relevant land and maritime routes agents", presented by Jeronimo Esteve Pérez and directed by Antonio García Sánchez.

According to the thesis.

The study argues that in the coming years will continue to increase the number of cruise passengers and cruise traffic in the world and particularly in the Spanish Mediterranean.

Research in the Faculty of Business of the UPCT notes that the average size of cruise ships continue to rise, "with which will require investment in port infrastructure to adapt the ports and the services they provide to new requirements for larger and passenger ships ", explained Jeronimo Esteve Perez and Antonio García Sánchez.

Competitors Cartagena

Regarding the port of Cartagena, "given the geographic dependence, which involves the creation of itineraries, Cartagena always have by geographical and economic few major competitors in the ports of Alicante and Almeria to clinch cruise vessels", say doctors .

Among other findings of the thesis also appears that the cruise industry is characterized as a highly concentrated market with three large groups of shipping: Carnival Corporation, Royal Caribbean and Genting Hong Kong, whose market power is not only very large currently but which is expected to increase over the coming years.

Seasonality

The work done in the doctoral program "Business Administration", also analyzes the seasonality of cruise tourism in the Spanish Mediterranean and that this activity, like all tourism related, is subjected to a disparate activity function of the months of the year to consider.

The analysis of the seasonality of crucerista activity is particularly important given the investment in port infrastructure needed to give scale cruise ships sail with increasing size of the Mediterranean in the coming years.

Specifically, the cruise traffic in the Spanish Mediterranean coast has a pattern of seasonality six months in high season, from April to October.

In this sense, the thesis also concludes that the seasonality of cruise traffic in this area of the Spanish coastline has been reduced during the period 2000 to 2013. Reduction is associated with increased activity in the low season months, indicating therefore this slight deseasonalize shipping.
