The Rector of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT), José Antonio Franco, and the Minister of Agriculture and Water of the Region, Antonio Cerdá, have signed a partnership agreement by which the Community will support research that coordinates UPCT within the framework of the European project 'Life + Irriman'.
This work aims to reduce by 30 percent the water consumption in table grape, peach, apricot, nectarine, almond and olive.
The initiative, led by the School of Agricultural Engineering and will run until December 2017, today joined the collaboration of the Ministry to other partners as Cebas-CSIC;
the Community Irrigation Genil-Cabra, located in the basin of the Guadalquivir;
Euromed and the National Federation of Irrigation Communities (Fenacore) and the University of Córdoba.
Irrigation communities Miraflores (Jumilla) and Campotéjar (Molina de Segura), where the tests are carried also involved.
The Minister of Agriculture said "this project will allow the Region of Murcia continue to lead, not only the proper use and management of water, but also advances and research allow us to be leaders in this field."
The work was conducted in an area of ​​between 6,000 and 7,000 hectares between the three irrigation communities that collaborate with pilot plots.
As part of the project, a website where irrigators will have access to real-time data to be collected time will be created, and subsequently transferred to other producers in the region.
The investment for this project is 1.8 million euros, financed by the European Union within the LIFE + program that funds activities that contribute to the development and implementation of policy on the environment.
The LIFE + program replaces a number of financial instruments dedicated to the environment, including the LIFE program that happens.
