The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment co-finance a project to prevent the extinction of chamomile tailings, a small annual plant that only grows on the coast of Cartagena and Algeria.
The work will be developed by researchers from the School of Agricultural Engineering of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) with financial support from the Port Authority of Cartagena and Biodiversity Foundation.
The total cost amounts to 52,000 euros, will begin the coming days and will end next December.
The project, entitled "Actions for conservation on the coast of Murcia tailings Chamomile (Anthemis chrysantha), a species in danger of extinction" aims to increase the number of viable populations of species in order to connect the only two populations natural that exist in Europe, located in La Azohía and on the island of tailings.
Thus, "we guarantee the recovery of population status and decreasing the threat of extinction of this species," says the researcher responsible, María José Vicente.
To do this, researchers introduced 6000 Agricultural chamomile plants in two new populations located on the coast of Cartagena and tailings mainland, where a population that became extinct at the end of the last century was located.
Chamomile plants grown in greenhouses experimental farm Thomas Ferro, La Palma, from seed to be harvested soon in natural populations.
The head researcher notes that some seeds of Anthemis chrysantha be kept long term genebank UPCT, with the aim of safeguarding greatest genetic diversity of the species.
The project also includes actions to raise awareness of the ecological value of chamomile tailings and the need to conserve this species.
Among them, is scheduled to edit a monograph on the ground that collect all scientific and technical knowledge the research group UPCT has accumulated since in 2005 began studying the species, which has already undergone a thesis doctoral.
Also planned is a publication for primary teachers and audiovisual material will be developed as a support for disclosure.
The researchers created a blog for the dissemination of the project, provide information on social networks and participate in outreach activities aimed at all audiences that are organized from the Autonomous Community as the Week of Science and Technology, Polytechnic University or Port Authority of Cartagena.
María José Vicente notes that "these actions are a reflection of the conservationist spirit of both the Port Authority of Cartagena as UPCT, contemplating this project as an opportunity to combine efforts for the conservation of this unique kind of port environment Cartagena ".
