The Governing Council has approved an agreement between the Ministry of Agriculture and Water and the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) to collaborate on the development of a project related to the efficient use of irrigation water for sustainable agriculture.
The project focuses on two areas of the Segura river basin and the basin of the Guadalquivir and will be held in woody crops in Mediterranean agro ecosystem.
Its strategy is the reduction of water during critical periods not to maximize yields or crop per unit of water applied.
The selected crops are grapes, apricots, peaches, citrus and almond trees.
The project, entitled 'Implementation of efficient irrigation management for sustainable agriculture', will cost approximately 43,400 euros, which will co-finance UPCT 21,000 euros from a grant from the European Commission under the Financial Instrument for the Environment, LIFE +.
The remaining 22,400 euros, will be financed with funds from the Integrated Centers Agricultural Training and Experience (CIFEAS) and District Agricultural Offices (OCAS) in the region.
The Community will have extraordinary economic obligations.
The LIFE + program funds projects that contribute to the implementation of the law on the environment, facilitates the integration of environmental considerations into other policies and contributes to sustainable development.
