This morning, la la Caixa and the city of Cartagena Social Development have signed an agreement to undertake to develop a Draft Intercultural Community through CEPAIM Foundation. In the firm have been Jaime Lanaspa, patron of the Banking Foundation la Caixa, and the mayor of Cartagena, Pilar Barreiro.
The ultimate goal of the project Intercultural Community (ICI) is to improve the coexistence and social cohesion in this neighborhood is characterized by a high level of cultural diversity.
The total population in the historic center is 21,008 people, which is constituted with a corresponding 52% adult population;
over 65 years with a 18.05%;
youth with 15.09% and 14.86% children with.
Of the total indicated population, 22.66% are foreigners, where neighborly relations in terms of multiculturalism require an effort of community work to facilitate social cohesion.
Therefore, the project promoted by Obra Social la Caixa plans to improve and build new relationships between citizens, administrations and technical resources on shared responsibility and shared commitment to these three actors of community life become protagonists and subjects of their own process of social development and improving local living.
The project will last three years and a budget of 375,000 euros, provided by the foundation.
OVER 20 YEARS WORKING DIVERSITY
As explained by the Mayor, Pilar Barreiro, the City of Cartagena has been working through various programs and initiatives for an intercultural policy that allows for diversity to strengthen social cohesion and integration over 20 years.
This experience starts in the decade of the 90s when the migratory phenomenon in the municipality starts.
Today Cartagena is part of the Network of Intercultural cities in Spain and is developing the project in the hands DELI Council of Europe whose aim is to work with immigrants across the business network.
The project was signed this morning is located within the area between the Paseo de Alfonso XIII, the railway station and Calle Real.
Covers two of Social Work Units of Area Department of Social Services.
For the mayor, the choice of this area is not casual.
The City of Cartagena has been working in the urban recovery of this environment has been remodeled streets, plazas, were approved aid to encourage the opening of our ongoing businesses and neighborhood development entrepreneurs.
These initiatives we join the intercultural project intervention as a step within a comprehensive urban action, equity and social recovery of the Old Town.
KNOWLEDGE OF REALITY AS A STARTING POINT
As explained Jaime Lanaspa of the Caixa Foundation, the starting point of Intercultural Community Project is the generation of a shared knowledge about the reality of the Old Town with the participation of citizens, professionals and experts, and representatives of the tissue associations and municipal departments and other administrations.
From here, a community diagnosis be developed and the main lines of development of the Intercultural Community Programming in the socio, health and citizen participation fields, with particular attention to different aspects of childhood, youth and life will be established family and society.
It is, in short, preventive, promotional, positive and enriching intervention, which promotes intercultural relations, social cohesion and empowerment of the society for coexistence and community development.
The development of the project will be borne by the CEPAIM Foundation and La Caixa Social Work are responsible for the direction and coordination of the same, with the help of a scientific team and an advisory committee.
FORTY ICI TERRITORIES IN ALL SPAIN
The Intercultural Community Project is sponsored by the Caixa Social Work, in collaboration with various social organizations and local governments, and endorsed by the Ministry of Employment and Social Security and the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP).
At present, the project is present in 40 territorial areas of 31 municipalities throughout the state with a high level of cultural diversity.
Part of its success is due to the combination of flexibility required for each context and unity in the methodological approach to intervention.
In this sense, the project, which began in 2010 with 16 territories of action, have joined in 2014 another 24, including Cartagena, whose development will at all times with the support of the Department of Greater Social Services of the City of Cartagena.
