The mayor, Pilar Barreiro, recalled this morning figure of Monsignor Javier Azagra, Bishop Emeritus and Honorary Citizen of the City of Cartagena, who died on Sunday, and its close relationship with our city.
It seems that all life was exerting bishop of Cartagena, is that despite having withdrawn always enjoyed participating in all that was done in the town, stood before the media on Monday the mayor, who also expressed his condolences and sympathy family. It is a great loss to our city, and that there were many who personally knew Archbishop Azagra he added.
Born in Pamplona in 1923, Monsignor Azagra arrived in Cartagena in 1970 as Auxiliary Bishop. In 1978 he was appointed Bishop of Cartagena, a position he held until 1998 when he resigned due to age, but has since been bearing the title of Bishop Emeritus of Cartagena.
In March 1995, coinciding with his 25 years of ministry in Cartagena and Murcia, the City Council appointed Adopted Son Cartagena attending the affection and admiration he professed all Cartagena;
his deep humanity and closeness to the people's problems as well as lucidity and moderation with which he always exercised his pastoral mission.
The Navarre heart Azagra also learned to express his preference for Cartagena and traditions. So, as long as he could no longer come to the events of the big day of the patron saint, on Good Friday, or Holy Week processions of which was a preacher in 1992.
