The mayor of Cartagena, Pilar Barreiro, today expressed in his name and in that of all the Municipal Corporation, its condolences and sympathy to the Bishopric of Cartagena on the death of Bishop Javier Azagra Labiano, Bishop Emeritus and Honorary Citizen of the City of Cartagena.
Born in Pamplona in 1923, Bishop Azagra arrived in Cartagena in 1970, as auxiliary bishop. In 1978 he was appointed Bishop of Cartagena, a position he held until 1998 when he resigned for reasons of age, although it has since been bearing the title of Bishop Emeritus of Cartagena.
In March 1995, coinciding with his 25 years of ministry in Cartagena and Murcia, the City Council named Adopted Son Cartagena attending the love and admiration that he professed to all Cartagena;
his deep humanity and closeness to the people's problems, as well as the clarity and restraint with which always exercised his pastoral mission.
The Navarre heart of Azagra also learned to express their preference for Cartagena and traditions. So long as he could no longer come to the acts of the great day of the patron, Good Friday, or Easter processions , of which he was a preacher in 1992.
