A thesis UPCT pioneer in wireless telecommunications research 5G (27/10/2014)

The high frequency waves that characterized Maria Teresa Martinez are what use the next generation of mobile devices to transfer data at higher speeds at gigabyte per second

Antennas that fit into a loose fist serve to provide wireless multi-gigabyte (Gb) per second to the next generation of mobile devices that populate homes and offices.

Study and predict the behavior of these telecommunications at very high frequencies is the subject of the thesis that Maria Teresa Martinez read last Friday at the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT).

The pioneering theoretical and experimental investigation of this new doctor Teleco School "will be critical for designing internal transmission systems in the millimeter band around 60 gigahertz (GHz)," explains José María Molina, one of the directors of thesis and research group leader in Mobile Communication Systems (SiCoMo) of the Technical University of Cartagena.

"The fifth-generation (5G) Mobile will use this frequency band and in the future, all devices will use a wireless network to transmit at a very high speed," says the author of the thesis, which has been mentioned European Doctorate to be performed in collaboration with the University of Lille.

"Is what we are tending, to free ourselves from the bondage of cables," he concludes.

During the multiple tests performed, got her doctorate transmission rates up to 5.8 Gb of data between devices at one meter and maintain speeds above gigabyte per second over distances of up to ten meters, which means multiplying by 100 the habitual performance of wireless networks, overcoming the Bluetooth system and eventually reach the same rates than USB 3.0.

"Using high frequencies higher transmission speeds are achieved, but at least away" sums Martinez.

Being millimeter wave antenna size used is only a few centimeters.

"It looks like a toy," he says.

"This system will also be the one that is used to cover passengers on planes and trains," the director of the thesis also Jose Victor Rodriguez.

"The high frequency limit allows precise extent of the signal, since it is attenuated in a small space, which will also serve to increase the communication security" reasons.

Other applications of this technology are wireless video streaming and biomedicine.

"Will any wireless electrocardiograms and ultrasound wireless", wearing her second pregnancy ejemplica Maria Teresa Martinez, Telecommunications Engineer and Master in Information Technology and Communication Pust, and who finish the thesis was "worse than childbirth because you have to give birth without medical assistance from a job that took you a long time. "

The exhibition was also in English.

This thesis characterization and modeling of the radio channel and their implementation on international standards such as IEEE has produced eight scientific publications in international journals of high impact and has three in review.

The SiCoMo UPCT group is the only one in Spain investigating millimeter waves.
