Melanie Biasio present in the Cartagena Jazz Festival, awarded EBBA (16/10/2014)

Did not enjoy as much resonance as MTV or BRITS, but European Border Breakers Awards have provided a platform for past winners Adele, Stromae, Zedd, Mumford & Sons, and Lykke Li, among many others, had a success yet greater internationally.

The Ebbas actually recognize those artists in pop, rock and dance that have been recognized beyond the borders of their respective countries with their first studio album.

Created by the European Union, this edition has awarded among others Melanie Biasio, acting for the first time in Spain in Cartagena Jazz Festival, on Saturday Nov. 22 in a double bill with Silvia Perez Cruz and Raül Fernández Miró.

Originally from Charleroi and currently based in Brussels, Melanie De Biasio is classically trained flutist and has an extraordinary voice, called the Belgian Billie Holiday. No Deal is the new album, released on April 28.

à album of the week recently at the Gilles Peterson show on BBC 6 Music, No Deal has already reached gold status in the charts in his native Belgium, and silver in France.

No Deal is a minimalist record, partly the result of improvisation, delight any music lover willing to take the time to soak in her subtle splendor.

The album should draw attention to the fans of the latest Talk Talk, Mark Hollis is a huge influence for De Biasio.

He also cites Frank Zappa and Pink Floyd as formative influences, besides Nina Simone and Abbey Lincoln, two icons of fighters for civil rights and voices of aggressive jazz stripped of any involvement.

No Deal contains only seven songs, through which the voice of De Biasio moves gracefully, sometimes disappearing altogether.

With Pascal Paulus on keyboards, Pascal Mohy on piano, and Dre Pallemaerts on drums, De Biasio has streamlined everything to make more room for her extraordinary voice.

There is a natural flow to the album, from intimate early on I Feel You note farewell With All My Love.

The European Border Breakers Awards, EBBA for its acronym in English, recognized each year 10 new successful artists or groups who with his first international album, released last year, have broken boundaries and reached audiences outside their own country.

The EBBA, created by the European Commission, is an award of the European Union
